The Impact of SS4A Grants In SC So Far

Did you know that since 2022, communities across SC have received more than $55 million in federal funding through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program?

What is Safe Streets for All?

The Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program through the USDOT helps local governments prevent crashes and save lives. It supports both short-term planning and long-term construction that make roads safer for everyone.

Across South Carolina, these grants are being used to plan and build safer, more connected places to walk, bike, and drive.

PWB has reviewed data from SCDOT and the USDOT  to compile the full list of South Carolina SS4A recipients. The results are encouraging and show a growing, statewide commitment to safety for all road users.

There are two kinds.

  • Planning and Demonstration Grants fund safety action plans, crash data analysis, and pilot projects that test ideas like new crosswalks or traffic calming.
  • Implementation Grants fund the construction of projects such as sidewalks, protected bike lanes, lighting, and intersection redesigns.

Momentum in South Carolina

Dozens of South Carolina communities have received SS4A grants. Many began with smaller planning grants and have since secured larger implementation funding to build lasting improvements.

A few examples include:

  • Goose Creek – which has received $6 million for the St. James Corridor Safe Streets & Crossings Project, adding a 3.3-mile shared-use path and safer crossings along Highway 176.
  • Spartanburg County – $16 million for safety upgrades along Asheville Highway and North Pine Street, including new sidewalks, bike lanes, and safer intersections.
  • Batesburg-Leesville – $7.9 million to calm traffic, improve intersections (we love roundabouts!), and add sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to downtown.

All South Carolina SS4A grants represent nearly $70 million in combined federal and local investment to make South Carolina streets safer.

We’ve consolidated a running list of SS4A grants across South Carolina. You can review the spreadsheet here!

What’s Next

The SS4A program is funded through 2026 as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, with nearly $1 billion available each year for new projects. That means several more opportunities ahead for South Carolina communities to apply and secure funding.

Several local governments already have pending applications, and we’re hopeful that even more South Carolina projects will be funded in future rounds.

Why It Matters

South Carolina remains one of the most dangerous states in the nation for people walking. The SS4A program gives local governments the resources to act before crashes happen.

Our Role and How to Get Involved

Members of our team are serving on advisory committees, sharing data and resources, and collaborating with advocates working to improve safety in their communities.

Does your community have an SS4A grant underway, or plan to apply in the next round? Reach out to your local government to learn more and ask how you can get involved, and reach out to us! We’d love to hear about it. Real progress starts with local voices.
