Our Work

For 30 years, Palmetto Walk Bike has advocated for safe, connected, and people-first transportation across South Carolina. Here’s how we’re making it happen:

State Advocacy

We work to shape statewide policy that supports safer, more walkable and bikeable communities. Our past SC Livable Communities Alliance successfully pushed SCDOT to adopt its first Complete Streets policy in 2021 — a major win for road safety in South Carolina.

Today, we continue that momentum by:

  • Participating in SCDOT’s Pedestrian and Bike Safety Action Plan in order to implement the Complete Streets policy on the ground
  • Coordinating the SC Livable Communities Advisory Council to inform our future work to support ped and bike safety across SC
  • Supporting efforts to create a statewide Trails Coalition and Plan

Road Safety Audits

We represent vulnerable road users on SCDOT-led Road Safety Audits (RSAs) across the state. Since receiving training from FHWA in 2014, we’ve participated in audits on some of South Carolina’s most dangerous corridors, including Harden Street in Columbia, Wade Hampton in Greenville, and Ashley Phosphate in Charleston. These audits help shape real improvements backed by federal safety funding.

Mapping: Low-Stress Bike Routes

We created an interactive bike map showing the safest, most low-stress streets for people riding in South Carolina. It’s based on real street stress data and local input. Use it to plan better rides and tell us if something looks off so we can improve it. Explore the map
