The Bicycle Safety Stop legislation passes 47-2 in the SC Senate! It made sure to slow to a safe speed, yield, and proceed when safe to do so…
Since our previous update, S.812 has passed the South Carolina Senate with a bipartisan vote of 47–2!!! The bill now moves to the House of Representatives, where it has been referred to the Education and Public Works Committee.
This is an important step forward for a policy that aligns traffic law with safe, predictable behavior at intersections. As outlined in our earlier post, S.812 would allow people riding bicycles to treat stop signs as yield signs and proceed through red lights when safe, helping reduce time spent in high risk areas and improving overall roadway predictability. You can read information about the Bicycle Safety Stop, aka Idaho Stop, here.
We are encouraged by the strong support demonstrated in the Senate and are grateful to Senator Luke Rankin for his leadership, as well as to partners across the state, including our friends at the Greenville Spinners, who helped bring attention to this issue.
As the bill moves through the House, public input will continue to play an important role. If you would like to share your perspective, you can find your State Representative at the link below!

We will continue to monitor S.812 and provide updates as it progresses.
